Friday’s Big Meeting is a web comedy that takes place in the fictional in-house chat room of a small design firm. In my search for readable web-based literary typography I was intrigued by the efficiency and openness of the written format of Hollywood scripts. I noted that scripts include terse, third-person descriptions of characters actions — the same kinds of descriptions that users of chat rooms were using to refer to themselves. To this script format I added some wisdom drawn from comics theorist Scott McCloud and posited that all the employees had a vocabulary of images of themselves to use as “emoticons/smileys” to their communication. The result was a communication interface design I wish existed today!
